Roadshow Socialization of BIENNALE JOGJA XII EQUATOR #2

Continuing its journey around the equator, this year Biennale Jogja XII Equator #2 (Biennale Equator #2) will collaborate with Arab countries as partners. Biennale Equator #2 will be held on November 16, 2013 - January 6, 2014 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Curated by Agung Hujatnikajennong (Indonesia) and Sarah Rifky (Egypt), Biennale Equator #2 will involve 40 artists from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to exhibit, create and dialogue with artists and art groups in Indonesia.

In relation to understanding the position and orientation of the Equator Biennale among other international biennales, Indonesia's relationship with Arab countries has become an increasingly important issue to discuss today. Both regions are not part of the mainstream region of modern art centered in Europe and America. Following global economic and political changes, there has been a new awareness among art practitioners of non-central regions, including Asia-Pacific and the Arab world, to undertake initiatives in the form of international exhibitions, art fairs, and artist residency programs that ultimately shape the new topography of international art.

Biennale Equator#2 will work on the theme of 'mobility' to read contemporary art practices in the era of globalization that has expanded the process of production, distribution and consumption of art, both as objects and ideas. According to Agung Hujatnikajennong, this complex situation on one hand opens up possibilities for artists to experiment and interact with the world, but on the other hand artists must also deal with new mechanisms that are unpredictable and have the potential to reduce their cultural autonomy as individuals. This curatorial framework is expected to be able to read and rethink the function and position of art in contemporary society.

Along with exhibitions and artist residencies, the Biennale Equator #2 program is accompanied by several accompanying programs, namely the Equator Festival, Parallel Events, Equator Symposium, Biannle Jogja Awards, artist talks, and workshops.

Biennale Equator #2 is the second installment of the Biennale Equator project launched by Yayasan Biennale Yogyakarta (YBY) in 2011. This project is a long-term agenda that will last until 2022, and in each implementation Biennale Jogja will work with one country or one region in cross-equatorial as a partner. The Biennale Equator will set certain geographical boundaries as its working area, namely the area that stretches between 23.27°N and 23.27°S. In 2011, Biennale Jogja Equator #1 successfully collaborated with India, with the theme "Shadow Lines".
