ACADEMIC SEMINAR "THE WORLD OF COLLECTIONS: The Upstream-Downstream of Artwork Ownership"

The Academic Seminar is an annual event held by the Faculty of Fine Arts, Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta. This year, the seminar was held at the Concert Hall of Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta on Thursday, October 3, 2019, with the theme "The World of Collections: Upstream and Downstream of Art Ownership." This seminar is motivated by the existence of creative objects as cultural objects. Works of art such as paintings, sculptures, graphics, crafts, batik, jewelry, as well as functional products and a number of event items can become extremely valuable collectible items. The extent to which the appreciation, management, and preservation of these creative objects will be explored in an interesting way.

The academic seminar opened with a mime performance by Djemek Supardi, followed by the launch of the second series of the "Dunia Koleksi" book, which was symbolically signed by Mrs. Dr. Suastiwi, M.Des., Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, ISI Yogyakarta. The "Dunia Koleksi" book is an anthology, a collection of 20 selected writings from Call for Papers with a major theme that is the same as the Academic Seminar, namely The World of Collections: Upstream and Downstream of Art Ownership. This book can be obtained by the general public by contacting the liaison officer Ajeng (081578891632).

The seminar was ignited by moderator Arinta Agustina, S.Sn, M.A., who guided the six speakers until the event concluded. The first speaker, Drs. Pustanto, as the head of the National Gallery of Indonesia, discussed the history of the National Gallery's construction, the acquisition of art collections, and their appraisal. The second speaker, Dr. M. Kholid Arif Rozaq, M.M., a lecturer in Art Management, presented theoretical studies by elaborating on his writing titled “Adaptation of Management in the Disruptive Era of Industry 4.0 (business sector, photography, education, and visual arts).” Next, the third speaker, Bambang “Toko” Witjaksono, curator of ArtJog, shared his experiences regarding the dynamics and scope of a curator's work, explaining how a curator is required to understand all aspects of an art exhibition, from the artwork itself and technical issues to influencing collectors' decision-making.

The fourth speaker, Ir. Benny Raharjo, discussed the management of Masterpiece Auction House, starting with building a collector network by fostering trust To Buyer, marketing strategies, his experience in the distribution process, and obstacles in the collection process. Then Philippe Augier, the owner of Museum Pasifika Bali, shared the history of Museum Pasifika Bali, his experience in acquiring collections, and the process of “lobbying” for his collected works. Finally, GKR. Bendara, as a Princess of the Yogyakarta Palace, explained the importance and necessity of managing artworks and archiving art objects that are heritage from past kingdoms. Therefore, the management is not only handled internally by the Palace but also in collaboration with various institutions outside the Yogyakarta Palace. With the end of this Academic Seminar, it is hoped that it can form the basis for studies and evaluations in the management of artworks.
