International Symposium "Art, Craft, and Design in Southeast Asia: in the Era of Creative Industry 2017" Faculty of Visual Art ISI Yogyakarta

On Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Sasana Ajiyasa Building, Faculty of Fine Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, the International Symposium "Art, Craft, and Design in Southeast Asia: in The Era of Creative Industry 2017" was held with two seminar sessions, namely session I with three speakers from abroad, namely: Dr. Toeingan Guptabutra (Silipakorn University Thailand), Dr. Ian Woo (Lasalle Collage of The Arts Singapore), Dr. Mumtaz Mokhtar (UiTM Malaysia), and session II with three speakers from the Faculty of Fine Arts IISI Yogyakarta: Dr. Timbul Raharjo, M.Hum., Noor Jayadi, MA., Nadiyah Tunnikmah, MA., where the event was attended by 150 participants from outside and from within the Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta, with the theme "Art, Craft, and Design in Southeast Asia: in The Era of Creative Industry 2017".

The background of the theme is that most Southeast Asian countries are inhabited by a number of ethnic groups and diverse languages. The different backgrounds, histories, and social cultures of these countries have led to an abundance of local wisdom and ingenuity which is a great strength in the face of global competition in every sector. In particular, they have great potential to influence arts and culture. Through their heterogeneous socio-cultural resources, Southeast Asian countries have a great opportunity to play a vital role as architects of our world civilization. One of the main ways is to contribute to the development of arts and culture through the creative industries.

Unfortunately, the richness of arts and culture has not been appropriately applied to the creative industry field due to unequal social and cultural conditions, environment, and needs. Local innovation through arts and culture has become one of the most reliable strengths. However, this strength needs to be actively discussed between Southeast Asian countries to address existing issues, build on strengths, and encourage collaboration in the field of arts, crafts, and design.

On the other hand, conditions in Western countries - particularly in Europe - have shown a path to economic instability and political and social conflicts that negatively impact the development of many sectors and ultimately lead to uncertainty. This, in fact, presents a golden opportunity for Southeast Asian countries to emerge and move aggressively especially in Asia. ASEAN countries can truly be on par with other developed Asian countries such as China, Korea, India and Japan by encouraging and developing themselves through the arts and creative industries.

Today, the creative sector has become a rising force that contributes massively to the national income of Southeast Asian countries. The magic of the 21st century is the access to technology, information, and the incredible global acculturation that drives the potential for success. It is no surprise that external cultural influences play a significant role in the incredible leap of the creative industries as they transform entire aspects of modern life.
There is no doubt that the economic life of Southeast Asian countries depends on their great creative industries. Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, and other ASEAN countries have started to blossom. The existence of AEC is a mutually beneficial alternative collaboration method as a way to showcase their excellent products. The capacity of the creative industry is an important issue to discuss. Based on local genius, natural resources, and social cultural diversity, the creative industry synergy between Southeast Asian countries is considerable. Their unique contributions are not only important, but will increase capital, and need to be embraced in the fierce competition in many sectors - both now and in the future.

To advance the mapping of the creative industry in terms of arts, crafts and design, the Faculty of Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta has extended an invitation to welcome participants from other institutions in Southeast Asian countries. The symposium program intends to welcome speakers from diverse backgrounds especially in the fields of visual arts, crafts, design, arts management, and media studies. The aim is to find new strategies to maximize the power of local genius in each country to empower the creative industry sub-sectors to thrive.

From an academic perspective, we hope that this international symposium will generate fresh ideas and innovative solutions to address the many issues facing the creative industry. Moreover, this meeting will strengthen academic cooperation between art institutions in the future. We will do our best to make this symposium an annual event. We are extending the opportunity for all institutions involved to become future hosts.

We encourage themes that involve many diverse approaches including, but not limited to:
- Explore the creative industries of arts, crafts and design
- The potential of natural resources and local culture as the main strength of the creative industry
- creative industries and technological advancements
- Art management in the creative industry
- conservation of precious artifacts and cultural heritage in ASEAN countries
- contribution of the creative industry as a solution to social and environmental problems through art
We sincerely hope that the abstract is received by October 28 and the full paper deadline is November 6, 2017.

The International Symposium will be held on November 15-18, 2017 at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta.
