"Local genius" in the big theme of the exhibition "Surprisse # 8" this time is raised against the background of the phenomenon of degradation of local values in the global cultural discourse, besides this attitude is a form of positive response to a strong belief in the power of local genius in Nusantara culture. Local genius simply relates to an understanding or perspective that is unique, creative, characterized, original or hybrid, and wise in responding to anything. The values of local wisdom in each region have a distinctive value and character that is expected to attract attention and can be a source of ideas in the creation of works that will be presented in the biggest exhibition event of Indonesian Craft students.
Each participant is welcome to explore, explore the values or creative findings of this "local genius" theme, participants are welcome to take from any point of view, local genius values can be used as ideas for creation or vice versa as objects to be criticized intelligently and creatively. It cannot be denied that this exhibition is an exhibition that will be attended by participants from Sabang to Merauke with the principle of representation from each cultural region. From here, it is expected that diverse works with the thematic of locality will be represented. In simple terms, this thematic is organized to align the themes in the creation of works that will be presented in this "Surprisse #8" exhibition.
Cultural identity, our locality is seen with the eyes of the present, locality is not a low object, but on the contrary, it is high and wise, therefore, however, the intelligence of our thinking is tested to be able to explore and find wisdom values in a cultural momentum or interpret events that we often encounter in the dialectic of society which is closely related to wisdom values.
Exploring artifacts and local genius values in the Special Region of the Archipelago.
From Sabang to Merauke is a special region of the archipelago, each cultural area has unique characteristics, holds local content and content that is very diverse when explored in detail and in depth because each cultural area must have local genius values.
The discourse of engineering is also carried in this exhibition, namely crafmanship. Craftmanship is a special skill/expertise with a high level in terms of engineering and material mastery, as well as the foresight to show the identity of the material, craftmanship is not always manifested in a complicated work/object/object with a very difficult technique, but it can also be a work with a simple form but with technical accuracy/handicraft, and a very valid and perfect construction.
In addition to works that are private expressions, product design works are also expected to fill a fairly interesting portion of the place in this exhibition, contemporary creative products are expected to be able to present a young and contemporary spirit, fresh and show new creative ideas. Functional works/objects are expected to be used as an opportunity to show creative functional works that still have a strong identity derived from local genius.
