From Recipes to Comics: IFI Yogyakarta and Fine Arts & Visual Arts Study Program ISI Yogyakarta Hold Comic Workshop with Guillaume Long

Yogyakarta, October 6, 2025 - Institut français d'Indonésie (IFI) Yogyakarta in collaboration with the S-1 Pure Art and Visual Communication Design Study Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, held a seminar on the topic of visual communication design. Comic Workshop titled "Painting a Receipt Using the Codes of the Comics". The event, which took place at IFI Yogyakarta, Jl. Sagan No.3, Terban, Yogyakarta, featured French comic artists and illustrators. Guillame Long as the main informant who has a special interest in food recipe-themed comics.

This activity was held in order to French Gastronomy Festival, is a three-day celebration of French culinary tradition and innovation, also known as the La Fête de la GastronomieThis is the event where the general public, culinary professionals, producers, and experts come together to promote and enjoy the richness of French gastronomy through various events such as cooking demonstrations, taste tests, and special menus. Interestingly, for this event, the culinary theme features a typical dish of the archipelago: Sayur Lodeh.

The activity took place from 09.00 to 17.00 WIB and was attended by 30 participants, consisting of 10 Students of Visual Communication Design Study Program, 15 Students of Fine Arts Study Program, and 5 Professional Artists. A number of lecturers from both study programs were present as facilitators while ensuring that the activities were conducive. The workshop was also attended by Margaux Nemmouchi (Director of Institut français d'Indonésie - Antenne de Yogyakarta) as the organizer of the activity. and French Ambassador to Indonesia, Fabien Penonewho witnessed first-hand the process of making recipe comics by the participants.

The workshop began with a session of live cooking Mrs. Sari demonstrated how to cook Sayur Lodeh. Participants were asked to record and photograph the necessary ingredients, and pay attention to each step by step in cooking until cooked. After that, participants practiced using watercolors to visualize the culinary object pisang ijo with only 2 colors, namely brown and blue. Then Guillame gave feedback on the results of the exercise before moving on to making comics from the recipe. The practice of making comics was carried out by all participants using watercolors, based on research data both recording and observation. The result was a one-sheet comic strip about the visualization of various cooking tools and ingredients, cooked lodeh vegetables, and the cooking process. Guillame Long selected the 5 best works to be published on her personal social media accounts as an appreciation.

This workshop is not only a forum for student self-development, but also an opportunity for cross-disciplinary knowledge exchange between students. visual arts, culinary research and visual narrative. ISI Yogyakarta students who participated in this activity claimed to have a new experience in combining field research with the creative process of illustration.

Through this event, IFI Yogyakarta reaffirms its role as a space for cultural exchange between France and Indonesia, while the collaboration with ISI Yogyakarta shows how the academic world and cultural institutions can collaborate to enrich contemporary art practices.
