The Big Family of the Faculty of Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta expressed deep sorrow for the passing of Indonesian sculptor Empu Ageng Edhi Soenarso to the lap of Allah SWT, tonight at 23.15 at Jogja International Hospital. The body will be laid to rest first in the Lobby of the New Rectorate Building ISI Yogyakarta, today at 12.30 WIB.
Edhi Sunarso was born in Salatiga, Central Java, July 2, 1932. He began learning and practicing making sculptures when he was a KNIL prisoner of war in Bandung between 1946-1949 which was then continued through official education channels at ASRI, Yogyakarta graduating in 1955 and Kelabhawa Visva Bharati University Santiniketan, India graduating in 1957. Apart from being a sculptor, he is also a lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta.
The works produced by Edhi Sunarso include the welcome monument at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the West Irian Liberation statue at Lapangan Banteng, and the Dirgantara statue in Pancoran. The three phenomenal statues are examples of the work of the cold hands of the man who is usually called Edhi.
May the deeds of worship during his lifetime be accepted by Allah SWT, and the family left behind be given strength and fortitude.
