NATIONAL SEMINAR, IN CONJUNCTION WITH GSRB FINE ARTS EXHIBITION 1975 - 1987

On Tuesday, December 06, 2016 at the Sasana Ajiyasa Building, Faculty of Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta, a National Seminar was held with the theme  "New Art Movement" with speakers namely: Prof. Dr. M. Agus Burhan, M.Hum., FX. Harsono, Jim Supangat, Hendro Wijayanto and with moderators Gogor Bangsa, M.Sn., and Bambang Wicjaksono, M.Sn. while the seminar participants were academics and art practitioners.

One of the tagline What is often echoed by the art community in Indonesia regarding the GSRB is that the New Art Movement is a marker of the development of contemporary art in Indonesia. GSRB is also interpreted as a marker of the wave of art development in 1975-1979 that entered a new terrain, namely a massive change in physical and conceptual manifestations. There are even some opinions that consider that GSRB produced a bigger pulse compared to its predecessor art group, the Indonesian Drawing Association (PERSAGI) led by Agus Djaja and S. Sudjojono. This is because the GSRB presented more complex issues through its manifesto than what was presented by PERSAGI. The GSRB manifesto aims to emphasize with the aim of breaking down the definition of fine art that is confined to painting, sculpture, and graphic arts. The belief is that art aesthetics is a plural phenomenon.

The artists who make up the GSRB are F.X. Harsono, Hardi, Ris Purnomo, S. Prinka, Anyool Soebroto, Satyagraha, Nyoman Nuarta, Pandu Sudewo, Agus Tjahjono, Dede Eri Supriya, Jim Supangkat, Siti Adiyati Subangun, Nanik Mirna, Wagiono S, B. Munni Ardhi, and Bachtiar Zainoel. It was an effort by a group of academics or art students against the monopolization of art by a single group of artists. The monopoly here is the too strong modern influence of their senior artists who are also their teachers on campus, which in some ways curbs the possibility of new forms of art itself. They manifested this in the form of an exhibition entitled "Pasaraya Dunia Fantasi" at Taman Ismail Marzuki from August 2 to 7, 1975, exactly eight months after the Black December incident. Some opinions say that the Black December event was the beginning of the New Art Movement itself. Four years later, the New Art Movement declared the Manifesto of the New Art Movement or commonly abbreviated as GSRB, which is one of the markers of the beginning of contemporary art in Indonesia.

The seminar, which is part of the 2016 GSRB exhibition, seeks to bring back the traces of cultural art reflections produced by GSRB during the movement's development and the discourse and aesthetics they have promoted until the latest period in 2016. How have the discourses and aesthetic ideals of the GSRB exponents and their role in the art world developed and changed since the early period until 2016?

The objectives of the seminar include:

  1. disseminate GSRB's aesthetic thoughts and achievements
  2. increase appreciation and discourse of artworks in accordance with the evolving spirit of the times,
  3. enlivening the art discourse in the art campus and the wider community.
