Mujirun Engraver: Sharing Career and Art Journeys in Professional Orientation Study Classes

Bantul, September 12, 2025 - On Friday (12/9), the Department of Fine Arts had a special guest, Mujirun a engraver or banknote engraver who is also an alumnus of SSRI/SMSR Yogyakarta. He is a figure who has devoted himself to being a engraver at the Indonesian Money Printing Corporation (PERURI) even before officially graduating from high school. During his visit, Mujirun shared his career journey and experiences.

This event is part of the Professional Orientation Study course for Semester 7 students, with lecturers Wiwik Sri Wulandari, M.Sn., M. Rain Rosidi, M.Sn., Ripase Nostanta Br. Purba, S.Pd., M.Sn., and Khoirul Anam, S.Sn., M.A. A warm welcome was delivered by the Coordinator of the Pure Art Study Program, Dr. Nadiyah Tunnikmah, S.Sn., M.A., who also gave souvenirs to Mujirun as a form of appreciation.

Born on November 26, 1958, Mujirun started his career at PERURI since 1979 until he chose early retirement in 2009. For three decades, he has not only been an important part of the team engraverIn addition, he continues to develop his skills through various education, both domestically and abroad. Among others, he studied at Studio Ifansyah (1998) to deepen his realist drawing and painting techniques, continued his studies at ITB (2002), and Postgraduate Program at ISI Yogyakarta (2007).

As part of his professional development at PERURI, Mujirun also had hands-on learning opportunities in several countries. He learned the techniques of engraving in Switzerland and Italy (1982), handling security printing in Malaysia (1990), participated in a comparative study of currencies in the UK (1992), and explored engraver software in Hungary (2004).
Mujirun's technical and artistic abilities are reflected in a series of works that have adorned the Republic of Indonesia's banknotes. Some of them are Teuku Umar (1988) with 5000 denomination, Sisingamangaraja XII (1987) with 1000 denomination, Cervus Timorensis (1988) with 500 denomination, Krakatau volcano landscape (1991) with 100 denomination, and Soeharto (1995) with 50,000 denomination. The Soeharto banknote is an interesting one because it was issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Soeharto's reign in building Indonesia. After completing his work for the Rp50,000 note, Mujirun chose to retire early and continue his work as an independent artist, especially in the field of art. engrave portraits and paintings, which he still pursues today.
During the session, which took place in the Audio Visual Room of the Fine Arts Department, Mujirun brought along a collection of his works and banknotes he had carved. He shared his professional experience, describing the creative process in engravingIt also motivates students to consider this profession as a career choice as a Fine Arts graduate. Profession engraver in Indonesia today is still very rare, with the number of practitioners that can be counted on the fingers. Therefore, opportunities are wide open for fine arts graduates who want to pursue this field, especially in institutions such as PERURI.
Towards the end of the event, Mujirun distributed signed prints of his works to the 110 students and lecturers present as a memento. He also handed over a special work in the form of an Albert Einstein portrait carving to the Fine Arts Department for collection, and closed the meeting with a photo session with all participants.
