Learning Widayat Through One First Step

Learning Widayat Through One First Step

Magelang, August 9 - September 7, 2025 - The Visual Communication Design (DKV) Study Program of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design ISI Yogyakarta again showed its work in the world of art and design by participating in the 2nd Step Awal Exhibition at the Haji Widayat Museum, Magelang, Central Java. The exhibition runs from August 9 to September 7, 2025 and is a continuation of the first event held in April 2025.

If in the first event the focus of the exhibition was on works of fine art, this time it was the turn of the Design Department of FSRD ISI Yogyakarta to get a special opportunity to display its best design work. This moment is an important event for young designers to show their skills, as well as open a creative dialogue space between contemporary design works and the spirit of work inherited by the Maestro of Fine Arts, Haji Widayat.

The Early Steps exhibition was designed as a platform for new graduates to begin their professional journey after a long college education. The name "Langkah Awal" was chosen to describe the starting point of the young artists and designers' new journey, who are now ready to tread the field of creativity in the real world. More than just a showcase, this event also honors Haji Widayat - an important figure in the development of art and design, not only in Yogyakarta or Indonesia, but also internationally.

In this second edition of Early Steps, the DKV ISI Yogyakarta Study Program displays a variety of student final project works, most of which depart from the themes of culture, social activities, and environmental issues. The variety of works on display includes pop-up book rich visual narrative, project branding from local identity to creative communication design that emphasizes social messages. All of these works are neatly organized in Hj Soewarni Gallery, one of the main exhibition spaces in the museum complex, which provides an atmosphere of appreciation and interaction between artists, designers and visitors.

Not stopping at the final project, DKV ISI Yogyakarta also presents new works that are more experimental. Sketches and Printmaking becomes the medium of exploration, then uniquely packaged in the form of a pin. Works Printmaking This is not only a result of creativity, but also a form of learning inspired by the legacy of Haji Widayat, who is known as one of the important figures in the introduction and development of print techniques in Indonesian visual communication design. Through these works, students and graduates try to absorb Widayat's spirit of innovation, while reinterpreting it according to the context of the times and the mediums they master.

This exhibition is more than just a showroom; it is an arena for learning, celebrating achievements, and connecting the past with the future. The presence of young works based on Haji Widayat's creative legacy proves that the first step can always be a strong foothold for a long and inspiring journey in the world of art and design.
