Sleman, October 28-30 and November 3-5, 2025 - Bamboo has long been known as a natural material that is sturdy, lightweight, flexible, easy to cultivate, and has an important role in the lives of Indonesian people. However, the Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Industry Association (HIMKI) assesses that the development of bamboo products in Sleman Regency is still hampered by the limited ability of small businesses to produce innovative designs. This condition makes local bamboo products tend to be uniform, imitating each other, and trapped in price competition, thus not being able to meet the needs of the global market that demands more functional and aesthetic design variations.
To answer this challenge, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta through Nusantara Art Innovation Program (PISN), which is under the Directorate of Research and Community Service, Directorate General of Research and Development, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology in the 2025 budget year, organized an activity entitled "Traditional Bamboo Furniture Design Development to Respond to the Global Market". This program presents training in the development of traditional furniture design "Lincak" as one of the superior products of Sleman Regency. The involvement of academics is very important in the creative process to encourage the emergence of more innovative and competitive designs, while maintaining the sustainability of traditional arts and helping to improve the welfare of the community.
This community service program was initiated by a team of ISI Yogyakarta lecturers-Martino Dwi Nugroho, Ismael Setiawan, Danang Febriyantoko, and Yulianto Purwono Prihatmaji-with students: Muhammad Fikri Hanafi, Zafirah Sitty Hartania Aurellia, and Aldi Rianafaldo. The implementation of activities is in collaboration with the main partner Rosse Bambu and in collaboration with the Saktya Mulia Bamboo Foundation and Bambooland. This program aims to improve the quality and innovation of Sleman bamboo handicrafts through strengthening the capacity of human resources, so that industry players are able to produce new designs that meet market needs, especially for Rosse Bambu partners.
Rosse Bambu, located in the bamboo industry center of Gentan, Seyegan, is a productive group that produces a variety of bamboo crafts and furniture. However, like other bamboo artisans in Sleman, the group still faces obstacles in design development. Over the years, product designs have tended to follow buyer demand and have not shown significant development, affecting both the group's competitiveness and the Sleman bamboo industry's position as a leading commodity. Through the design training organized, this program is expected to strengthen innovation capabilities so that products - especially Lincak - are able to compete in the global market.
The training took place over six days, on October 28-30 and November 3-5, 2025, at the Saktya Mulia Bamboo Foundation and Rosse Bambu. The training was divided into two sessions, namely the design concept workshop session and the Production workshop. A total of 20 participants consisting of students and craftsmen produced 10 designs of lincak-table sets with knockdown and folding systems. In addition, this program will also produce two lincak prototypes in the form of chairs and tables with a similar system. The prototypes are planned to be submitted to the Sleman Regency Industry and Cooperative Office as a model for developing Sleman's distinctive Lincak design.
