Sketching is an artistic activity that begins the process of creating a work of art. In a general sense, a sketch is the design of an artwork. In a broader context, sketching is a visual record of anxiety, ideas, inspiration that is quick, spontaneous, and practical. Often, (visual) artists express their ideas for their projects through sketches first. The importance of a sketch when it becomes an independent work is because its value is the result of thoughts and interpretations about something perceived by the artist or sketcher. Sketches are important, but they are often overlooked when they are only completed as designs. Sketching is the study of something that is implemented through the effective, accurate and appropriate utilization of line.
The sketches in the Sketches Exhibition "Zig-Zag" by M. Dwi Marianto and Joseph Wiyono, which will take place from July 8 to 21, 2020 at Miracle Prints, in addition to reviving the values of sketches as pure works, will also place sketch works in the context of the situation of their time. Including here, related to the organization of the exhibition, trying to respond to the current situation that is being hit and experienced, namely: the Covid-19 pandemic situation that has touched the situation and emotions of the individual sketchers and the community.
Zig-zag as a concept in this exhibition is a response and resonance of the zig-zagging of the current situation that inevitably becomes a necessity to maintain the continuity (various aspects) of life. For the sketchers in the exhibition, zig-zagging is also a way of interpreting how to utilize time and opportunities in the busy office hours to zig-zag with their own time and lines to produce sketches.
The form of the exhibition is planned to be formal/manual and virtual. The manual format is by displaying the works in a gallery by adopting health protocols that have been determined by the government. The virtual exhibition format is carried out in the form of digital impressions through social media platforms and other digital forums. Accompanying the exhibition, as side event is an event webinar or zoominar and a joint sketching event live which involved both sketchers and participants who were invited or signed up from various places respectively.
