Kulon Progo, September 20, 2025 - A total of 145 students of the Interior Design Study Program, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, participated in an excursion study to Bale Klegung, Kulon Progo, on Saturday, 20\/09\/2025. This activity is an implementation of the Interior Materials and Products course, which aims to provide direct experience in analyzing local materials and construction in vernacular architectural buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Synergy Between Nature and Design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bale Klegung, by Eko Prawoto Architects, was chosen as the study site for its strong representation of applying natural materials, particularly wood, with a smart construction approach. Students not only learn the aesthetic aspects, but also dive into a sustainable and contextual design philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These excursions are part of a curriculum designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of materials. Theory in the classroom must be balanced with hands-on observation, and Bale Klegung is a perfect example of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interactive Learning Process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity was hosted by Dr. Ir. Mahatmanto, MT, who acted as the main speaker. He explained in detail the design process, material selection, and construction techniques applied to Bale Klegung. Students were enthusiastic in observing every detail, from the building structure to the finishing elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This excursion was also attended by four accompanying lecturers from the Interior Design Study Program, namely:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Inspiration for the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Through this activity, students gain a deep insight into how a design can integrate with the surrounding environment. They were also invited to think critically about their responsibilities as future designers in choosing sustainable materials. The excursion was closed with a documentation session and group discussion, as material for further analysis tasks. With this hands-on experience, the students are expected to apply the insights gained into their future design projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
