Vienna, May 6, 2025 - Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (AFAV) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, at 5 p.m. local time, on the main campus of AFAV, Austria. This signing is an important milestone in strengthening academic and cultural relations between these two prestigious art institutions.
The collaboration began in early January 2025 with a visit from the Academy of Fine Arts Viena delegation of 7 people (2 lecturers and 5 students) and continued with a visit from the ISI Yogyakarta delegation from May 4-12, 2025.
through the Mobility Art Project with the Fine Arts Department of ISI Yogyakarta, which is supported by the Erasmus+ funding scheme. This initiative provides opportunities for exchange of students, lecturers, and cooperation in the form of public lectures, presentations of works, symposia, research, journal publications, and workshops across art disciplines.
The visit of the ISI Yogyakarta delegation was warmly welcomed by Dr. Johan F. Hartle as the Rector at his main campus which has been established for more than 300 years, as well as lecturers, as well as the familiar response of Academy of Fine Arts Vienna students. Dr. Hartle stated "We must move quickly together so that this spirit is not only completed in the form of an MOU but also in real work. We are very happy to build academic and art relations, especially ecological issues, climate change through eco-art projects between the two campuses".
This local - global recognition for project mobility builds an atmosphere of intimacy, equality, and mutual respect, strengthening the collaborative spirit on which this cooperation is based.
During several days in Vienna, representatives from ISI Yogyakarta such as Prof. M. Dwi Marianto, Dr. I Gede Arya Sucitra (Vice Dean of Academic Affairs FSRD ISI Yogyakarta), Satrio Hari Wicaksono, M.Sn, and Dr. Gogor Bangsa, M.Sn (as head of the international affairs unit) as well as 2 fine arts students also had the opportunity to give presentations on academic aspects, public lectures, and organize workshops as part of joint academic activities. This interaction is expected to be a starting point for a wider exchange of ideas and artistic practices in the future.
This collaboration marks a new spirit in expanding ISI Yogyakarta's global network and opening space for inclusive and sustainable dialog and art practices. Like the spirit we carry together: "Together we can go far."
