Dr. Suwarno Wisetrotomo, M.Hum, lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts FSRD ISI Yogyakarta as Assistant Director I of Postgraduate Academic Affairs ISI Yogyakarta, received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Nandur Srawung, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, and the DIY Culture Office. The award was given by Dian Laksmi Pratiwi, S.S., M.A, Head of the DIY Culture Office (Kundha Kabudayan), on Thursday, August 15, 2024, in conjunction with the opening of the Nandur Draeung (ND) Exhibition "Wasiat: Legacy" at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta.
Suwarno Wisetrotomo, born in Kulon Progo in 1962, is a renowned artist, critic, curator and essayist from Yogyakarta. His dedication to art began in childhood, inspired by great artists such as Affandi, Vincent van Gogh, and Raden Saleh. He completed his art education at FSRD ISI Yogyakarta and Gadjah Mada University. Major influences in his life came from figures such as Butet Kertaradjasa (a high school classmate), Jim Supangkat, Siswanto HS, Prof. Made Bandem. Butet, a classmate, inspired Suwarno to write art essays. Jim, a senior curator, involved Suwarno in various curatorial works, fostering a critical attitude and responsibility. Siswanto, an art collector, often discussed artworks and struggles with Suwarno. Prof. Bandem trusted him to speak at academic forums in various places.
Suwarno believes that art is a universal medium without language barriers, capable of conveying profound messages and building understanding between people. His curatorial works have taken place at national and international levels. He has also written many books and scientific articles, enriching the Indonesian art scene. In the course of his career, Suwarno has held many important roles such as Vice Chairman of the DIY Cultural Council and Member of the Board of Curators of the National Gallery of Indonesia. His work shows that this friendly figure lives the art world, especially fine art, with a devoted attitude. Through this Life Time Achievement Award (LTAA) from Nandur Srawung 'Wasiat', 2024, we celebrate his extraordinary dedication and his positive influence that continues to inspire the younger generation in the art world.
